Electricity production adequately meeting demand, TSO spokesperson says

Electricity production from renewable energy sources (RES) and conventional sources is sufficient to meet increased demand, and no problems are expected, barring unforeseen circumstances, Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSO) Spokesperson Ηara Kousiappa has said.

"There is enough capacity to cover demand" during peak hours as well as during the night, when the system relies more on conventional generation, she noted in statements to CNA.

Kousiappa said that during peak hours, usually between 2pm and 4pm, the forecasted demand is around 1,030–1,050MW.

According to the TSO’s website, around 12.30pm on 9 August, demand was at 1,002 MW, met by 480 MW from conventional production, 513 MW from distributed production (photovoltaics), and 9 MW from wind production.

Kousiappa was also reassuring regarding the evening peak hours, around 7–7.30pm, when photovoltaic production drops to a minimum. "These are the critical hours that we always want to cover with conventional energy to ensure sufficiency," she said, noting that no adequacy problems are expected unless a serious failure occurs.
