Christodoulides' visit to India begins: Focus on IMEC and important business meetings with announcements anticipated

With strong economic, investment, and geopolitical significance, the visit of the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, to India begins today and will last until May 23. The visit is taking place following an invitation from the country’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, who had visited Cyprus in June 2025.

The visit will focus on the further strengthening of Cyprus–India relations, the attraction of investments, the enhancement of business cooperation, as well as the strategic role that Cyprus seeks to play as India’s gateway to the European market and the wider Eastern Mediterranean region.

The President of the Republic is accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Constantinos Kombos, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Alexis Vafeades, the Deputy Minister to the President Irene Piki, the Deputy Minister of Innovation, Research and Digital Policy Nicodemos Damianou, Government Spokesperson Constantinos Letymbiotis, the Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna, Chief Scientist Demetris Skourides, and officials.

On the business side, participants include the Chairman of Invest Cyprus, Evgenios Evgeniou, the President of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), the President of the Stock Exchange Marinos Christodoulides, and members of the business delegation.

Upon arrival, the President of the Republic will visit the memorial site of the terrorist attack at the Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai, where he will lay a wreath, paying tribute to the victims of the 2008 terrorist attack, including a Cypriot. The first stop of the mission, Mumbai, is also India’s business hub.

The first official day of the visit includes a particularly busy program. The CCCI, in cooperation with Invest Cyprus, is organizing a Business Forum, in which more than 200 Indian entrepreneurs and company representatives are expected to participate, aiming to strengthen investment and trade cooperation. Subsequently, Invest Cyprus is organizing a roundtable with business and economic stakeholders of the country and, according to information, significant announcements are expected after the event. The program also includes the official inauguration of the Eurobank Group’s office in Mumbai, marking the further banking and business presence of Cypriot and Greek interests in the Indian market.

In addition to the above events, the President of the Republic will hold separate meetings with Indian businesspeople and investors, while he will also visit the National Stock Exchange of India.

Speaking on Monday evening at the 18th IN Business Awards of IMH, the President of the Republic stated that tangible results are already being recorded from the growing interest of Indian companies in Cyprus, noting that a number of companies have decided to invest in the country and use it as an entry point to the European market of 450 million citizens. As he said, Cyprus is now being approached as a European hub with international prospects and stability, while he described the mission to India as an initiative with a clear political, economic, and developmental orientation. At the same time, he noted that the goal is to open new avenues of cooperation in sectors such as technology, innovation, education, energy, and tourism.

Of key importance is also the meeting that President Christodoulides will have the following day, Friday, in New Delhi, where he will travel to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at a time when India is continuously strengthening its economic and geopolitical influence internationally and the European Union is strategically investing in further developing its relations with the country. Upon arrival, the President will visit the Gandhi Memorial, where he will lay a wreath.

Within the broader framework of contacts, the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) is also expected to be discussed, a project of strategic importance that ranks high on the European agenda and in which the Republic of Cyprus seeks to acquire a substantial role, both at the level of supply chains and as a hub for connecting services, investments, and trade.
