Transport, Communications and Works Minister Alexis Vafeades will on Friday, 20 February inform stakeholders in Larnaca, about the results of the study conducted by Greece's National Investment Fund (Superfund) regarding the development of the city’s port and marina.
According to statements made to CNA by Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras, “at 3pm on Friday, during an extraordinary session of the Larnaca City and District Development Committee, the Minister of Transport will update us on the results of the Greek Superfund’s study concerning the two major developments, namely the port and the marina.”
Vyras and Vafeades are pictured above.
He added that “this will be followed by a discussion of the Development Committee, which is of decisive importance for the progress of the development of the two projects.”
Mayor Vyras specifically noted that “the Minister will brief us on the Prosperity Group’s proposal to revive the project, he will present the Hyperfund’s study and the options available, and he will also respond to our proposal to create a working group to monitor the timelines.”
It was also pointed out that on 2 February, a meeting of the Larnaca City and District Development Committee was held to discuss the future of the port and marina, and the next day, the Municipality sent a letter to the Minister of Transport.
In the letter, the Committee expressed unanimous and strong dissatisfaction with the delays in delivering both the Hyperfund study and the foreign experts’ report, as well as with the lack of clear timelines for the next essential steps required to genuinely advance the development of the Larnaca port and marina.
The Municipality’s letter also states that the Development Committee has decided that within 15 days all aspects of the proposal to revive the project by shareholders of the Kition consortium should be examined and presented to the Committee, along with the Ministry of Transport’s reasoned position.
It further calls for the presentation of clear and specific timelines — a roadmap — for the completion of the Hyperfund and foreign experts’ study, the conclusion of the public consultation, and a clear plan for how the desired development of both the port and the marina can be implemented as soon as possible.
The letter also requests the creation of a working group, including representatives of the Municipality of Larnaca and the District Administration of Larnaca, to monitor implementation and intervene should any deviations occur from the established timelines.
Finally, the Municipality wrote that if the Minister does not respond to the letter with clear and complete answers to the issues raised, members of the Development Committee strongly believe that protests in late February and early March will be inevitable.
