Cyprus and Saudi Arabia to sign MoU on tourism

Cyprus and Saudi Arabia will proceed with signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the field of tourism, following a virtual meeting held between Deputy Minister of Tourism Kostas Koumis and Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Minister of Tourism, Princess Haifa Al Saud.

The agreement, set to be finalised in the near future, aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation and establish a joint technical committee to monitor its implementation.

According to a statement from the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, Koumis during his 26 August meeting with Princess Haifa Al Saud stressed the importance of deepening tourism collaboration between the two countries, a view fully endorsed by Princess Haifa. He proposed creating a technical committee comprising officials from both sides, tasked with overseeing and ensuring the effective implementation of the memorandum’s provisions.

Air connectivity between Cyprus and Saudi Arabia was also a key topic of discussion. Additional technical-level meetings are planned in the coming weeks to further improve flight connections. Currently, the two countries are linked through flights operated by Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia) during the summer season.

The meeting also addressed issues such as sharing expertise on best practices, advancing tourism education, and other areas of mutual interest.

Saudi Arabia has set ambitious goals for rapid tourism development. Initiatives already underway include the launch of a new airline, Riyadh Air, the establishment of what was introduced in 2023 as the world’s largest vocational tourism training school and the Neom Project, an entirely new city built with sustainability at its core.
