The Junior and Senior School is a high achieving, all-through private British International School for children aged 2-19 which was highly accredited by the Independent Schools Inspectorate in October 2016. It has been educating international and Cypriot children since 1944 and has a long tradition of high quality educational provision. However, the school continues to invest in the latest pedagogy and educational research to continue to train our experienced staff. The school operates in beautiful grounds with modern facilities fit for 21st century learning.
The Purpose of The Junior and Senior School is to provide excellent, innovative and creative education that enables all students to realise their full potential and to enjoy a fulfilled life as confident, compassionate and healthy members of the global community; continuing to learn, and contributing to a better world for all.
The Junior School was established in 1944 by the British Council, working with an enthusiastic group of parents, who wished to provide a primary school which would be suitable for expatriate British children living in Cyprus. It was intended that the School should also provide places for other children whose parents desired this type of educational opportunity. In 2003 the Senior School was established extending education from 12-18 years and incorporating study for IGCSE and A level qualifications. During the 14 years since the inception of the Senior School section, the school has grown considerably and has become a school of choice for both the local Greek Cypriot and Armenian community but also for other nationalities and we welcome an increasing number of embassy staff and UN children.
The present Junior School buildings were first occupied in 1951. Since then, numerous additions and renovations have been made in order to meet the growing needs of the children. Commencing in 2010, a major building renovation programme began to ensure that the facilities were modernized and brought up to the standards of a top school looking to the new millennium. The buildings were modernised in two phases, with excellent facilities being incorporated in the original building and a modern new extension added; the design concept is ‘The past and the future’. Classrooms are spacious and modern technologies are now a feature of the everyday life of all students. Due to a rise in pupil numbers and a need for improved buildings at the Senior School, in March 2016 the school moved to its new site in Latsia. This has provided with state of the art, 21st century facilities including extensive sports grounds and two swimming pools, a gymnasium, a drama studio, a specialist Music and recording studio and fully equipped science laboratories.
The school offers education based on the British National Curriculum for children from 2 to 19 years old and many extra-curricular activities, clubs and excursions. It has a strong academic tradition but also provides students with regular opportunities to perform in music and drama productions, promoting creativity and to represent their school in sports teams. Its professional staff of around 180 teachers plus assistants and administrators and its innovative approaches to pedagogy have helped in increasing the number of students, despite the financial crisis. Today, they teach around 1,200 pupils. Recently inspected in October 2016 by an International inspectorate the school achieved high levels of praise for its work. Pupils at the school achieve increasingly high levels of attainment in public examinations such as IGCSEs and A levels and students go on to study in prestigious Universities and conservatoires in the UK (including Russell Group) and also in Europe and the USA.
The Principal of the school is Deborah Duncan with previous leadership experience in education in the UK and Cyprus and she is also a UK and international school inspector. The highly experienced staff from the UK, Cyprus and around the world undergo regular training on teaching and learning and pastoral care. The school adheres to the philosophy of ‘Growth Mindset’ which involves encouraging students to adopt a ‘can do’ approach to their learning and education. Students are taught to overcome obstacles and to become independent and resilient learners in preparation for higher education and employment later in life.
The Junior and Senior School is unique in Cyprus in that it is a not for profit organisation. The Board of Governors, made up of 10 members elected from the parent body act as the directors of the School whilst the educational senior management team have responsibility for its day to day running.
